A Vampire's Kiss: Part 2
"I thought it wasn't supposed to . . ." she said softly, her green eyes gazing into his eyes.
"Supposed to what?"
"My heart . . . beat . . ." she said. "I can . . . feel it hammering in my
chest . . . Just like I'm still . . . alive . .
.."
"We still have blood.. and we drink it to stay alive.. but unlike the myths you have heard, we can also eat normal food."
"I saw you at dinner eating . . ." she replied. "Another reason I didn't think you were telling me the truth . . . She stepped away from him for a moment and sat back down on the bed. "This is still so much to take in . . . what about my company? What about my work . . . ? My friends . . . co-workers . . ."
She didn't have that many close friends and Charles was the closest she had to real family . . . her family was filled with abusive people. Her father was the only one who wasn't . . . after he died everything changed for the worst . . . except that SHE got Bennet Industries and they only got pocket change. In the end, her father knew what they were . . . and did his best to protect her.
"You cannot go back." He said. "You have died this night..."
"But I just talked to Charles . . . He knows I'm alive . . ." she said. "I have . . . I have to see him. He has to know . . . someone has to know . .
.."
"Do you think he shall believe you? Go ahead just wait until after dark." He
said.
"So . . . what happens now?" she asked. "As you said, even if he doesn't believe me . . . what happens? Obviously most of what I know about vampires isn't exactly the truth . . . and . . ." She was still unsure . . . confused . . .
"I don't know, I never told anyone.." He said. "And my next of kin is dead for a long time now."
"How do you live?" she asked. "I mean, obviously you have money . . . to have a place like this . . ."
"I have always had many names, lived in many countries." He said. "Last names that is, it is even easier with the inventions of internet and the computer to give yourself a new place to stay. I have money and companies all over the earth."
"I just can't lose my father's company . . ." she said. "He trusted me with it . . . and . . . and it's his legacy since . . . since I can't give him another kind . . ."
"You cannot go there at daytime."
She sighed. "I can handle a lot of it over the computer, but meetings . . ." she said. "I handle the meetings . . . Oh my god . . ." Could she just hand that responsibility to Charles. It would be like giving up a part of the company. Not that she didn't trust him . . . if there was ever anyone to trust . . . But then she thought about what he said . . . She would have been dead . . . There was gratitude within her. She was glad she wouldn't have to suffer what was waiting for her. But it wasn't an easy thing to accept. Her life for the last few years had been the company . . . Of course Charles had wanted her to take a
vacation . . . He’d said it over and over again . . .
"You have to make your arrangements.. you can rent any apartment as long as you make sure it is adapted for people that cannot endure the sun. It is an illness."
"What about you?" she asked softly. "Us . . . if there is an ‘us’ . . ." She was afraid.
"I have a large mansion in the city.. one you are very welcome at.. I.. fell in love with you.. but maybe it is too soon.."
She smiled softly. "I haven't been with anyone . . . not in a long time . . . not since . . ." She couldn't say it. It was still hard for her to talk about. "But it's strange how with you I felt different from the first moment you approached me . . . Is that a vampire thing or . . . a chemistry thing? I don't know . . ."
"That is chemistry." He said.
She smiled softly. "I have to admit . . . I'm pretty scared . . ." She hated admitting that, but she felt so far out of her depth . . .
"That is understandable. But you will find, it's not bad being a vampire."
She give him a little smile. "And I have you to guide me?"
"Yes.. if you wish me to. I am not the only vampire.."
"I figured that . . ." she said apprehensively. "But I doubt all the others are like you . . ."
"Many are." He said. "Some are not only out for blood, they have no style."
Slowly, she reached out for his hands. "So when did you know you would turn me?" she asked curiously.
"I wasn't planning on it, until we danced, until I knew you would wither away and die.. I could not let it happen."
She smiled softly. "I need a teacher . . ." she said softly.
“I shall teach you.. you must be hungry, I see it at your color.."
She nodded, but wasn't sure how she would take to drinking blood . . .
He went to the fridge, and took out some blood. "We can live of animal blood for a short while, but not forever.." He poured the blood in a glass, and warmed it in the microwave. Then he handed it to her. "Trust me, it isn't so bad."
She was hesitant, but took the glass. The thought churned her stomach, but at the same time, the smell made her hungry . . . It made no sense . . . But finally, she took a sip and soon realized the glass was empty. "Oh my god . . ." she said.
"Want some more?" He asked taking the glass.
"I guess . . ." she said. "It was like . . . I don't know . . . salty . . . metallic . . ."
"I know, human blood is way sweeter.."
"I can't even imagine . . . I mean . . . how do you get human blood?" she asked softly. "I mean, we have to kill people?"
He nods. "Oh yes, we do... but we can pick who and what we kill." He adds. "I live off the blood of the criminals of the world. I am known as Mystic shadow.. the vampire killer.." Smirk. "The government captured me once... a man called Peter Harden trained me, he is human.. but he figured I would be the perfect assassin."
"And . . . you think I will be?" she asked curiously.
“Maybe you find your own prey, but this is what I normally hunt.. you are by the way the first I turned into a vampire.."
"I don't remember much of . . . what you turned me," she said softly. "I vaguely remember you biting me and me drinking your blood . . . I thought I'd dreamed it . . ." She laughed softly.
"It was the truth.." He said. "That is how it is done."
She took the second glass he offered. "So I guess . . . I meet Peter Harden . .. . after I speak with Charles . . . I have to . . . and . . . do I have fangs?" she asked not having looked at herself, but she thought she felt points on her canines.
"Yes you do.." He smiled. "Very pretty and sharp.."
She smiled again. "So . . . being a vampire so we have special powers or anything? Or is it just being immortal?"
"We are immortal, we can turn ourselves into the shades.. we are the knights that dwell the night, you have superior smell, vision and hearing.."
"Speed? Strength?" she grinned. "Or was that just made up? I don't believe we can fly . . ."
"We cannot fly, but superior strength and speed we do have."
"Well, that alone should make life interesting . . ." she said. "I guess I should . . . shower . . . and pay Charles a visit . . . I can take time off . . . He'll be more than happy if I disappear from work for awhile . . ."
"Do that or take a bath.." He said. "I will not ring Peter, but I leave his number at the phone since it is your choice.."
She nodded. "Does he know about me yet?" she asked.
"No.. he doesn't.." He said. "So it is entirely up to you, if you tell him.. Ishlan sent you.."
She nodded. "All right . . ." she replied. "Will you come with me?" she asked.
"Yes I shall." He said. "It is not so far."
She took his hand. "Want to . . . shower with me too?" she asked and blushed.
"I would love to.” He kissed her.
They returned to her suite as she kissed him and helped him out of his own clothes as her shirt was unbuttoned and dropped to the floor . . .
His hands roamed..
She moaned softly as she kissed him. She'd never felt this way with anyone . .. . especially after what had happened . . . but this him it was so much . . . as if they were meant to be.
They melted together, but as soon as they had their love making over he left, for a job as he said
She sighed and showered, hoping that he would go to see Charles with her . . .. but maybe it was best she went alone . . . Though she still didn't feel secure enough with this new identity of hers.
Dressing, she grabbed her cell phone and headed out the door. She was given keys. Calling for a cab, she also placed a call to Charles.
"I'm coming over," she said. "We need to talk."
"Is everything all right?" he asked with some concern.
"Yeah . . . kind of . . . I'll talk to you when I get there," she said.
"All right," he replied. "I'll see you shortly. I'll put on some tea."
"Good idea," she replied.
It wasn't long before she was on her way there.
Ishlan emerged just before Charles arrived however. He took her hand and smiled.
She smiled with relief. "I'm glad you're here . . ." she replied.
"I know you need me, but you explain, you know him better, let me make some coffee.. so you are alone for a moment while knowing I am near.'
She nodded. As soon as she walked into the study, she found him. He looked concerned.
"Lizzie . . ." he said with concern. He went to her and embraced her. "I was so worried about you. What happened? You look a bit pale . . ."
She smiled and laughed nervously. "Yeah . . . a lot's happened, Charles . . . Some of it you aren't going to believe . . ."
"Try me . . ."
"You know, Ishlan Pavlova?
"Yes, the place we rented for the ball was his . . ." he said.
"Yeah, well . . . I've been with him this whole time," she said.
Instantly he was smiling. "That's wonderful!" he replied and hugged her.
"Yeah," she replied. "Actually it is a good thing . . . but . . . uh . . . something's changed and you're going to have to handle a lot more of the business. I can do a lot from my computer, but I won't be able to do the face to face meetings anymore."
"What?" he asked with surprise. "Why?" he asked with even more concern.
"Well . . . they take place during the day and . . . I can't be out in sunlight anymore."
He laughed. "Don't be ridiculous . . ."
"I'm not. If I go out in the sunlight I'll die," she replied.
The seriousness of her voice told him she wasn't joking. "What happened?” he asked with concern.
"Well . . . I am not lying about this and you need to have an open mind . . .."
"What, Lizzie! For god sake tell me what's going on!"
"I'm a vampire . . ." she said.
He stared at her. Out of everything she could have said, that was not one he had expected to hear.
"A . . . a vampire?" he said with disbelief. "You can't be serious . . ."
"Yeah . .. you know I thought the same thing at first, but it's true . . . I even have the fangs," she said showing him her teeth. "Trust me, these are real . . ."
"I can't believe it," he said. "It can't possibly be true."
"Charles, I'm handing over a large portion of work to you . . . does that sound like something I would have normally done?"
That gave him pause. "Still, you have to understand how outlandish this sounds.”
"Of course, I do," she replied. "but you know me . . . I'm not lying. I'm a vampire . . . I'm going to need to take some time off. I will handle everything I can over the computer and when I'm back in town we'll have our usual meetings . . ."
"Well, having you over for dinner might be a problem . . ."
"Not really," she said. "I can even go to fundraisers and meetings as long as they're in the evening . . ." She sighed. "Charles, I need you to understand and be there for me . . . It's not exactly something I'm used to yet myself. It's all new territory."
"But why?" he asked.
"I asked the same thing," she said. "Turns out I was dying and I didn't know it . . . Ishlan saved me . . ."
"From what?" he asked.
"Remember when I was raped?" she asked. She finally said the word.
"Of course," he replied. As if he could ever forget it.
"He gave me aids."
"But your tests were clear . . ." he said.
"I was scheduled for another test next month . . . it would have come out positive . . ."
"And you're certain?"
"I believe him . . ." she said softly.
Ishlan came inside now, with coffee, he put the tray down and disappeared like a shade.. but her senses told her he was near.
"Coffee?" he said with surprise.
"Yeah," she said with a smile. "Can you accept this?" she asked. "I can still eat real food . . . I can be the same person I was . . . I just can't be out in the sunlight . . ."
He smirked. "I wanted you to take a break, but this is pushing it a bit far . . ."
She laughed softly. "I know," she replied. "But can you accept it?"
"Lizzie, you're my goddaughter . . of course . . ." He embraced her.
An audible sigh of relief escaped her.
Ishlan came in now, and waited.
"Charles, this is Ishlan . . ." she smiled and went to him taking his hand in her own.
He could see the instant light in her face. She liked him . . . a lot . . .
"Nice to meet you face to face," he smiled. "Charles Dunham. We spoke on the
phone a few times as I made some of the arrangements for the ball."
"Yes we did it is a pleasure to meet you." Ishlan said calm.
They shook hands. "So I guess you're a . . . vampire as well? Well, since you changed her . . . of course."
"Yes." He said calm anew.
